Charles Krauthammer Gets Mugged By Reality.
During the whole Van Jones debacle, Charles Krauthammer declared that communism was a “a pose, not a conviction” in that no one really adheres to communist beliefs outside of tinpot dictatorships and English departments at univerisities. However, he may be changing his tune. I don’t know if he recognized environmentalism for what it was in the past, but Krauthammer has figured out in the present that the environmentalism is about wealth redistribution from rich countries to poor ones. He states that although socialism failed, it exists in rampant environmentalism:
Socialism having failed so spectacularly, the left was adrift until it struck upon a brilliant gambit: metamorphosis from red to green. The cultural elites went straight from the memorial service for socialism to the altar of the environment. The objective is the same: highly centralized power given to the best and the brightest, the new class of experts, managers and technocrats. This time, however, the alleged justification is not abolishing oppression and inequality but saving the planet.”
Now, there is only a matter of degree of difference between socialism and communism: practice of socialism almost always lead to outright communism. Vaclav Claus, the former Prime Minister of Poland recognized this, as Charles Krauthammer has mentioned (although Jonah Goldberg suggest that Claus is a follower on the issue). Indeed the recent actions of the Obama Administration – unilaterally declaring carbon dioxide a danger and intending to try and regulate it – is a classic power grab that is only used by rampant socialists and communists. The Constitution was established to prevent exactly these types of power grabs by the executive: after all, we didn’t elect kings to rule us, but Presidents to represent us.
This is another example in a long growing list that is confirming that global warming, in particular, is not about saving the planet, but about gaining access to rich countries’ wealth (the U.S. especially). The action by the Obama Administration is just more confirmation that Obama himself is a socialist.
What is new is actually old. Socialism has never worked in any instance, yet humanity continues to go back to that trough. It puzzled Ayn Rand then, and it continues to puzzle today: why do men seek to enslave themselves to their governments and unelected bureaucrats?
